Family sailing course

We are holding an introductory or improver training sessions for parents and children sailing in a boat together so that both can develop their sailing and seamanship skills in a way that is compatible with but not part of RYA formal training awards.Couples may also find the sessions useful.

Objectives

The course will teach or remind participants the basic concepts of sailing including:

  • Covid precautions
  • Safety and Clothing
  • Rigging a boat
  • Steering
  • How do sails work
  • 5 Essentials sail set, balance, trim Centreboard, coarse made good
  • Going about
  • Gybing
  • Capsizing importance of staying with the boat
  • Being towed
  • Approaching a beach, pontoon or buoy

Parents will be shown how to teach and encourage children to understand and practice these concepts.

Method

There will be one instructor in a power boat with two sailing dinghies, one for each family of participants. (A family could be a parent with 1 or 2 children, 2 parents and 1 child, or an adult couple. Only members of the same household in a boat together).

Prior to going afloat the instructor will outline the basic concepts of sailing and may carry out some land based demonstrations.

The majority of time in the sessions will be on the water.

Duration and Number of Sessions

Beginners:3 sessions of 3 hours each no previous experience.

Improvers:2 sessions of 3 hours each for adults with previous experience up to Level 1

Beginners:Friday 6th August 09:00 12:00, Monday 10th August 09:30-12:30 and Tuesday 11thAugust 10:00-13:00

Improvers: Monday 17th August 15:00 18:00; Tuesday 18th August 16:00- 19:00

Costs:

Beginners: £75 per family / boat (Parent & 1 or 2 children or 2 Adults) for 3 sessions

Improvers: £50 per family / boat (Parent & 1 or 2 children or 2 Adults) for 2 sessions
