Anne Davis kindly donated a new award to SGBA this year - the "Young Sailor of the Year". The award was presented on Sunday 11th October during the Monitored Sailing session. Wet play. The forecast didn't look as promising for day 3 of the school taster sessions. Will Howitt (one of our dinghy instructors) moved the initial briefing under cover into the club house ground floor. By the time the briefing was over the children couldn't wait to get out onto the water despite the continuing rain. Their enthusiasm was rewarded when the sun came out (briefly) and a gentle breeze blew down the river,

Day 2 of the school sailing tester sessions brought more wind but less sun. The children initially seemed a little more apprehensive but Will quickly engaged them with competitive dinghy paddling and they were soon raring to head out. Reefing the main-sails avoided unintentional capsizes and the children impressed us all with how quickly they grasped the essentials and they were soon speeding along in their dinghies.

The weather was perfect for day 1 of the school taster sessions. While we waited for the wind to arrive, the children enjoyed a competitive paddle race around a buoy and practiced capsizing. A gentle breeze arrived in time for them to spend the majority of their time out on the river putting theory into practice, with great results. Thanks to all involved.

We had six families/couples take up the offer of beginner or improver Family Introductory Courses during August. These are two sessions of three hours each to enable beginners or those with a little experience to learn the basics of sailing. They can also help parents wanting to teach their children to sail.
