    School sailing taster day 1

The weather was perfect for day 1 of the school taster sessions. While we waited for the wind to arrive, the children enjoyed a competitive paddle race around a buoy and practiced capsizing. A gentle breeze arrived in time for them to spend the majority of their time out on the river putting theory into practice, with great results. Thanks to all involved.

These are two sessions of three hours each to enable beginners or those with a little experience to learn the basics of sailing. They can also help parents wanting to teach their children to sail. Will Howitt was the instructor for these sessions. If anyone would like additional instruction during or outside monitored sessions please

Rescuing the Wanderer during storm Francis

Unfortunately the Wanderer on the mooring adjacent to the club house capsized during storm Francis. The strong wind and waves pounded the boat's mast into the mud so that when a rescue mission was launched it took multiple attempts before the mast was extracted from the creek mud. The boat was pulled clear using a harness formed by joining together the painter and the main sheet which was secured to the mast through the centre-board

    Unexpected visitor

When the Dart Harbour Authority pontoon was installed last year one of the aims was to encourage more river based visitors to Stoke Grabriel. Not sure this is what we had in mind though.

Last week, the SGBA hosted an RYA Dinghy Instructor course. Whitehall Skiff Re-Launched

Keen SGBA rowers may have noted the temporary absence of our Whitehall skiff from the booking system over the past few months. Now thanks to Steve Goodchild the repairs have been completed and she is better than ever, with new rowlocks and beautifully varnished woodwork. She is once again available to book . The skiff is ideal for two; one rowing the other siting back and enjoying surroundings, as well as solo outings.

    9th August Monitored sailing

Perfect conditions for a relaxed Monitored sailing session last Sunday; enough wind to keep moving, but not enough for involuntary capsizes. Patrick organised three one lap races. Even if you haven't raced before, it's worth having a go. Patrick explains the rules, the course is straightforward and Patrick has an encouraging word for everyone. If you've ever been put off racing before by all the shouting, you'll find Monitored sailing racing to be amongst the
