The SGBA Clubhouse Remains Closed With Currently No Use of Club Boats

Published 19:47 on 13 May 2020

Following the government announcement on Sunday 10th May 2020 and subsequent clarifications, we want to update you on the position regarding use of SGBA facilities and craft.

The health and safety of all members remains our priority and we will continue to take precautions to reduce the risk of infection from Covid-19 in accordance with Government guidance.

We also need to ensure that the risk of any incident requiring support from the emergency services is minimised.

Whilst it is the SGBA's role to facilitate safe boating activity on the river, it remains members' individual responsibility to make informed choices about their activities. This applies to adults as well as to teenagers and children, with younger members posing additional needs.

We are urgently working through how we can relax this "closed" position. In doing so we will follow the RYA's guiding principles:

  1. Always follow Government advice.
  2. Take a considerate approach, being mindful of the potential impact which our activities could have on other water users and not to place unnecessary extra strain on the RNLI and emergency services
  3. Be mindful of boating within your capability and checking for weather, tides, suitability of equipment/buoyancy aids and that a friend/relative ashore knows your plans.
  4. Take it step by step. We are reviewing our range of activities (both ashore and afloat) and the precautions we need to take to reduce the spread of the virus and are actively developing a roadmap with phases for lifting restrictions which will likely happen step by step.

Use of shared facilities and equipment requires a thorough evaluation of the risks and the measures that must be put in place to ensure we reduce infection risk and that these measures can be adhered to.

Your Executive Committee, are all very keen to get you back on the water and making use of SGBA facilities as soon as it is safe to do so, however we are not yet in a position to resume normal SGBA activities. As such the clubhouse remains closed with no use of club boats/craft. We realise this news may be a disappointment for many of you, but hope for your understanding and that we can bring more positive updates in the near future.

Members may use their own boats berthed on the foreshore providing that they do not touch any of the shared SGBA facilities at Mill Point and should also follow latest Dart Harbour Guidance. We welcome the Dart Harbour notice issued this morning but stress that this only applies to private craft and not to club owned craft.

Further RYA guidance is also expected and we have specifically requested advice on shared boat use which is an issue at other clubs too.
