Well - what a busy summer on our wonderful River Dart. The club goes from strength to strength, now with 1,066 members at the last count. During the heatwaves being out on the water has been such a fabulous place to cool off!

Particular highlights of the past month have been the Junior Sailing courses (two in August) and the number of people we continue to train for their RYA PB2 qualifications.

We have a some fun participative events coming up to watch out for:

  • Kayak and Canoe escorted trips for small groups - first trip Friday 9th September
  • Cricket/Rounders and BBQ on the Middleback sandbank - Sunday 11th September
  • SGBA Regatta - Sunday 18th September

. More details to follow in the next newsletter and on the SGBA members' WhatsApp group.

The WhatsApp group is our means of communicating quickly with members, for updates, changes or issues relating to the boat fleet. If you would like to join the WhatsApp group, please let me know.

Just a few reminders from me, which are especially relevant during these busy days:

  • You need to book the boat(s) you want to use via the website - and please cancel your booking if you're not going to use it - so others can get a look in.
  • Please don't take out any boats that you have not booked.
  • Normally don't book more boats than people on your membership. If you have guests, they must be signed in and accompanied.
  • When you return your boat(s) please ensure they are washed as a courtesy to the next user. If cleaning off mud, do consider using river water to save on usage of fresh tap water.

Training/Courses

A full programme of RYA courses is underway - details are posted in our newsletters and on the website calendar, via this link: https://sgba.org.uk/events

We have a full programme of PB2 courses running and for those powerboaters needing a local induction to use SGBA safety boats, dates are now available on the calendar.

In addition, our Senior Instructor Will is once again offering bespoke sail training for adults - see the latest newsletter for details.

Duties/Volunteers

A reminder that we expect all members to play their part in supporting club events and to keep our facilities in prime condition. Unlike most sailing clubs, we don't mandate a certain number of duties per year per member - instead relying on the goodwill and support of our wonderful members to play their part.

You can help from being an OOD at Sunday Sailing & Boating, providing Safety Boat cover, participating in our Working Parties, helping with our sailing courses, etc. We have made it really easy to volunteer via the website: https://sgba.org.uk/page/volunteer

Happy boating and I look forward to seeing you out on the water!
