Enjoying the River Dart - Advice from the SEAL and Bathing water quality reminder
Published 12:44 on 22 May 2026
The weather is hotting up and we are all eager to enjoy more time on the water. Here is a reminder of some important guidance to enjoy the river as safely as possible.
S.E.A.L.
The SGBA SEAL safety check represents the following:
Safe conditions: Evaluate weather, wind, and tidal conditions. Ensure they are within your capability level.
Emergency contact: Carry a reliable means to call for help (such as a waterproof phone) and ensure someone on shore knows your plans.
Appropriate clothing: Dress appropriately for cold waters (wetsuit or drysuit) and wear strong-soled footwear to protect against sharp rocks and oyster shells.
Life jacket or buoyancy aid: Must be worn at all times while afloat.
Bathing Water Quality on the River Dart
The Environment Agency announced the results of their water quality testing over the summer 2025 season. Dart Harbour and Navigation Authority has published details and recommendations in their DHNA Notice LNTM 28-25 Bathing water quality. The full notice can be found by clicking this link DHNA Notice LNTM 28-25 Bathing water quality
On the Dart the results are as follows:
Totnes Steamer Quay & Stoke Gabriel: Poor Bathing is not advised
Dittisham, Warfleet Creek & Castle Cove: Excellent.
Based on these results, Dart Harbour and Navigation Authority strongly recommends that you do not swim in the upper reaches of the Dart Estuary, north of Higher Gurrow Point / Sandridge Boathouse.
The latest EA information is available here and this is where any new EA data will be displayed.
Another useful source of information is the SSRS (Safer Seas and Rivers Service)

SGBA additional recommendations
In terms of SGBA activities, we recommend our members take note of the EA and DHNA advice and take appropriate hygiene measures including those listed below. All water craft and other equipment should continue to be washed down after use, using the hoses provided and Club facilities are available to members to wash/shower.
Thorough Washing: Always wash hands thoroughly with soap and clean water immediately after being on the water and before eating, drinking, or touching your face.
Cover Cuts: Cover all cuts, grazes, and blisters with waterproof dressings before getting into the boat or onto the water.
Avoid Swallowing Water: Take care not to swallow river water or let it splash near your mouth. Avoid contact with the water completely if you have any exposed cuts or skin abrasions.
Protect Food and Drink: Keep food and drinking containers securely closed to prevent splashing. Avoid drinking directly from "sports top" bottles that have been exposed to river spray.
Check, Clean, Dry: Follow biosecurity protocols by thoroughly cleaning boats, equipment, and clothing with hot water to prevent the spread of invasive species and pathogens between waterways.
Report Pollution: If you spot sewage pollution, contact your local water company. Report blooms of Blue-Green Algae or other chemical/biological pollution concerns directly to the Environment Agency
